Want plastic sheeting? Is Bunnings the best place to get it?
Sometimes it’s a no-brainer to go to Bunnings for what you need, but other times it’s not so clear.
If it’s something like builders plastic in Australia and New Zealand, then Bunnings is probably the best and easiest. But if you want something for a different kind of project, then, to be honest, I’ve always found Bunnings to be a bit limited for choice. So the answer on whether to get plastic sheeting products from Bunnings or not is… depends.
You know how it goes, Bunnings has a price matching service and has outcompeted almost every mum and pop hardware store in Australasia into oblivion so where else would you get it right? Of course, if you leave out big commercial quantities and highly specific bespoke products, for the every day Joe, it’s pretty much Bunnings followed by Mitre 10 and Home Hardware where people get polycarbonate sheeting and panels and everything else they need handyman and DIY wise in Australasia. Sigh… It’s priced matched, you can impulse buy a bunch of other stuff while you’re there.. Sigh… pick up all and sundry additional fasteners, nuts and bolts in the process. Sigh… I kind of feel bad, but it really is very convenient. Let’s put it this way. If my kids don’t give me a Bunnings gift card for my birthday or Christmas, something has gone seriously awry. So yep, I reckon if it’s for a straightforward need, pick up your builder’s plastic sheeting from Bunnings. But if you want some plastic for a project like a little greenhouse or simmilar, you might need to look further afield. Every time I need something robust and clear for hot box to start plants in early or something to re-cover my little greenhouse with, I’m usually disappointed with what’s on offer at Bunnings. For something that won’t tear immediately, the only thing I’ve only been able to find is reinforced plastic tarp that has that nylon weave in a small square pattern on it. I find the size it comes in quite limiting for a start, plus after about a year in direct sun, all you have left is the square nylon bits with non of the plastic remaining. Check out the FAQ below for some alternative suppliers if you need something a bit different.

A Bit More About The Range Of Plastic Sheeting
Builders Plastic
Builder’s plastics are a type of polyethylene film which can be used for waterproofing and as an insulating material in the building industry. You’ll find both black and clear builder’s plastics at Bunnings so you won’t have to worry about a colour clash.
It come in various lengths and widths so you’ll be able to find a sheeting that’s suitable for your job whether it is big or small. They come in two different widths: 2000mm and 2500mm.
Builders plastics are available in three thicknesses: 300 microns, 600 microns and 900 microns – the thicker materials will provide slightly better insulation but they’re more expensive.
PVC Sheeting
PVC is a type of plastic sheeting that’s often used in the construction industry. It can be either opaque or transparent, and available at Bunnings in sizes up to 2000mm x 6000mm – so you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for here!
You might want to take into account PVC’s ease of cutting when choosing your material though as it can’t be cut with home scissors like some plastics can.
It also comes in different thicknesses: 300 microns, 600 microns and 900 microns but don’t forget about its higher price tag too!
So if you need something that will last longer than builder’s plastics then we recommend going for the stronger PVC sheets. They may cost more initially but it’ll be worth it in the long run.
PVC Plastic Sheeting Price: $35 per sheet | Materials Thickness: 300-900 Microns | Available Sizes: 2000mm x 6000mm
Polycarbonate Sheeting
Price: $45 per sheet | Materials Thickness: 300-900 Microns | Available Sizes: 2000mm x 6000mm
Polycarbonate plastic sheeting is the strongest and most durable of all materials, making it a good choice if you have high traffic or heavy winds at your site.
For the ultimate protection, we recommend polycarbonate as it can’t be easily cut with a knife or scissors. It also doesn’t rip like some other plastics which means that you’ll get more life out of your product!
Polycarbonate Plastic Sheeting Price is higher than PVC at $45 but its versatility really makes up for this cost. The only downside is because it’s so strong, cutting could be difficult; especially if you don’t have access to power tools. Polycarbonate sheets are available in thicknesses from 600 micron and 900 microns too – all depending on what you’re looking for.
